Point Lookout

Located at the mouth of the Potomac River on the Chesapeake Bay. Constructed in 1830 as a one-and-a-half story wooden and masonry building. It was rebuilt as a two-story structure in 1883 with the light at 40 feet. It was the location of a Civil War prison camp which imprisoned as many as 52,264 Confederate soldiers. Considered to be the most haunted lighthouse in Maryland.

Just downstream from the locks a Great Falls Tavern, this is the small waterfall created by the spillway that diverts water around the locks

The Hunting Island Lighthouse protects the Southern approach to St Helena Sound on the South Carolina coastline. Hunting Island is halfway between Savannah and Charleston. We last visited there in the early 90s

St. Augustine

St. Augustine Lighthouse

We made numerous trips to St. Augustine over the years and always made a visit to the lighthouse. This is one of the best views of the light. We will return some day.

A number of years ago I was working at Langley AFB when a rare snow storm blew through the area. I drove down to Fort Story to catch pictures of the Cape Henry Lighthouses in the snow. The old light was built in 1792, after fears arose that is was about to fall down it was replaced in 1881 by the new cast iron tower that is still in operation today. The old tower is still standing and is open to tours.
