St. Augustine Lighthouse

We made numerous trips to St. Augustine over the years and always made a visit to the lighthouse. This is one of the best views of the light. We will return some day.

A number of years ago I was working at Langley AFB when a rare snow storm blew through the area. I drove down to Fort Story to catch pictures of the Cape Henry Lighthouses in the snow. The old light was built in 1792, after fears arose that is was about to fall down it was replaced in 1881 by the new cast iron tower that is still in operation today. The old tower is still standing and is open to tours.

We were on the Towpath Canal below Great Falls last winter when I found the inspiration for this painting. The sun was setting and the waxing gibbous moon was just rising over the tree line. The stark whiteness of this sycamore stood out against the winter forest.
